M.S. in Computer Science

The M.S. in Computer Science is available as a thesis or non-thesis option. The thesis option requires at least 30 credit hours, including six credit hours of thesis. The non-thesis option requires at least 33 credit hours. For both options, students must complete core courses in theory, software development, and computer sciences. The core courses include analysis of algorithms, philosophy of computation, queuing theory, programming languages, software testing, multimedia programming, concurrent programming, computer data security, mobile computing, and advanced data mining. For the thesis option, the thesis committee must be made up of a minimum of three faculty members, including at least two members and a chair or co-chair from the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

Ph.D. in Computer Science

The Ph.D. in Computer Science requires a minimum of 84 graduate credits, including 33 credits of dissertation past a bachelor’s degree. An advisor must approve all courses. In addition to the completion of the required credit hours, students must receive a satisfactory score on a qualifying examination. The qualifying examination evaluates if a student is prepared to conduct research at the doctoral level and has the ability to publish in journals and conferences. The dissertation component must be completed under the supervision of an advisor and dissertation committee. Students must also past the oral dissertation examination. Examples of computer science courses for the Ph.D. program include computer operating systems, design and analysis of algorithms, data structures, logic design, structured computer architecture, and stochastic models for computer science.

Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science

The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science program provides the highest degree of academic scholarship and research in the field. The objective of the program is to generate highly qualified individuals for research and teaching careers in academia and advanced positions in the industry. The degree requires a minimum of 72 credit hours past a bachelor’s degree, including at least 12 hours in upper level computer science courses or advanced classes in other areas approved by an academic advisor.
