Computer science in one of the most popular fields, which is why finding accredited computer science degree programs in Kansas is so important.  Though you might think that all programs and schools are the same, you’ll change your mind after you take a look at some of the best programs now available. The top Kansas colleges will give you a strong foundation that prepares you for working at a private firm, as a video game developer or as a computer expert.

Kansas State University

College of Engineering

Established in 1863, Kansas State University is a public university that emphasizes research and development. The large campus is home to a number of newer buildings with state of the art technology available for students, but those students also take courses in historic buildings on campus. Ranked as one of the top 200 schools in the country by Washington Monthly and U.S. News & World Report, Times Higher Education World University Rankings also named it one of the top 400 schools in the world. Its computer science and engineering programs are some of the best programs in the country too.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

Kansas State University offers several accredited computer science degree programs designed for students of all ages and skill levels. New students start out in the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program. This 124 credit hour program requires that students take a minimum of 15 credit hours of courses each semester to graduate within four years, but the school also lets students attend classes part-time. Students can choose several courses in humanities, social sciences, math and life sciences to meet the undergraduate requirements, but students must also take a few elective courses in those areas. Required computer science courses include ethics and computing technology, introduction to programming languages, programming fundamentals, introduction to computer engineering and computer architecture and operations. Though students take specific classes in their last two semesters, the program lets them choose a few electives to meet the requirements of the program and take a break from the otherwise heavy course load.

M.S. in Computer Science

Students with an undergraduate degree in computer science can apply for admission to the M.S. in Computer Science program at Kansas State University. The Graduate Students Committee keeps a close eye on students enrolled in the program and requires that those students maintain a grade of B or higher in their upper level courses. Students dropping below that grade point average receive an academic warning, and those continuing to receive low grades will face expulsion. The program looks at five different areas of computer science: languages, systems, structures, theory and implementation. Required courses for graduation include programming languages, semantics of programming languages, advanced operating systems, advanced computer networks, principles of artificial intelligence, formal language theory and data base management systems. Students also learn how to build and develop their own software and programs while working with a faculty member, and they present their final project during their last semester.

PhD in Computer Science

Kansas State University understands that computer science is a competitive field, which is why it carefully selects applicants for its PhD in Computer Science program. Applicants must have high scores on all areas of the GRE and have a background in computer science. Though it is a 90 credit hour program, KSU lets students transfer up to 30 credit hours from an accredited Master level program. Unlike other programs, it doesn’t require that students complete Master work on campus. Students take 24 credit hours of courses in the PhD program and several electives to gain more credit hours. The remaining hours come from the time that the student spends working on a dissertation. Prior to writing or working on that dissertation, students must meet with a group of faculty members, explain the research they hope to do and receive approval to finish a research plan and complete that project.

The University of Kansas

School of Engineering

Founded in 1865, the University of Kansas is a large school with a total population of more than 27,000 students. In 1891, the university opened its School of Engineering, which lets students earn a degree in a technology field. Several presidents of major corporations, astronauts and chairmen graduated from this program. U.S. News & World Report listed the school as the 45th best college of engineering in the country, and it also gave high ranks to other programs offered by the school. The University of Kansas itself received a ranking of 75 when Washington Monthly compiled its list of top schools.

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

Designed for students with strong math and science abilities, the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is one of the accredited computer science degree programs in Kansas that helps students gain the skills needed for working in the aerospace and computing industries and in the private sector. The University of Kansas encourages students to apply for admission through its online system, and those students will learn if the school approved their application through their email. Computer science is a rapidly changing field. The computers used by people just a few short years ago are completely unlike the computers used today. The University of Kansas believes that students should gain a better understanding of the programs used today but also develop skills that will help them create the systems used by future generations. This four year program requires that students take electives, general education courses and a large number of math and science courses in addition to classes on systems, networking and programming.

Master of Science in Computer Science

The number of jobs available for those with a computer science undergraduate degree continue decreasing every year. Many employers want students with a strong background in math, science and computing, which you can achieve through the Master of Science in Computer Science program at the University of Kansas. Students can enter the program during the fall or spring semester, and the program usually takes two years to complete as a full-time student. In addition to learning more about computer operations and systems, students can also choose from one of seven concentration areas. Those areas include computer systems design, computing in the biosciences, intelligent informatics, languages and semantics, network systems, theory of computing or security and assurance. After choosing a concentration, students will meet with a faculty member working in that area. The professor serves as your adviser and helps you throughout your studies, including when you complete your final project.

Doctorate of Philosophy in Computer Science

As with the M.S. in Computer Science program, the Doctorate of Philosophy in Computer Science is open to students entering in the fall or spring. Prior to entering the program, you must present a copy of your transcript that shows you took graduate level computer science courses. Though the program requires courses in computer science, students will also complete a dissertation. Your dissertation must be in one of seven concentration areas as listed above. The school assigns you a faculty member, and that member will follow your research carefully to ensure that you meet the minimum requirements of the program. Many students choose a concentration area during their first semester, and the university asks that you give your adviser information about your dissertation before finishing your first year. Upper level students can apply for teaching and research positions that let them earn money for tuition and other expenses while working on their degrees.
