Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science

Building a strong foundation of core courses in mathematics, science, programming, and logic design to provide a broad spectrum of knowledge in this field, the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Computer Science program is focused on the practical design of efficient computational processes and reliable software that meet given specifications. Within the 125-credit program, there are three concentration areas in Theory of Computing, Software and Knowledge Engineering, and Computer Systems. In addition to the electives, independent research projects, and directed studies throughout the entire program, there is a rigorous two-semester capstone design project in the senior year for students to work in collaborative teams with a faculty mentor.

Master of Science (M.S.) in Computer Science

With the goal of preparing qualified graduate students for both professional careers in advanced areas of computer science as well as research careers, the Master of Science (M.S.) in Computer Science program is available in a traditional full-time format with flexible afternoon or evening classes on the main campus in Morgantown. The program is organized into five areas of concentration, which are Electronics and Photonics, Systems and Signals, Computer Systems, Software/Knowledge Engineering, and Theory of Computing. Students in the program also have the freedom to select one of three different completion tracks: the 32-credit thesis option, 34-credit problem report option, or the 34-credit coursework option.

Ph.D. in Computer Science

For graduate students with superior academic achievement who desire to pursue a career in research or teaching at the university level to expand the field of computer science, the Ph.D. in Computer Science program leads to the most advanced degree with a well-established structure that allows students to build the unique skills for these professional accomplishments. Students can choose from five areas of concentration, which are Electronics and Photonics, Systems and Signals, Computer Systems, Software/Knowledge Engineering, and Theory of Computing. In order to complete the doctoral program, students must pass a qualifying exam, accumulate enough credits of advanced studies, complete a doctoral dissertation research project, and successfully complete an oral defense.
