Although the doors didn’t open until 1974, the seeds for Maharishi University of Management began in 1955 when Maharishi Mehesh Yogi began teaching the simple, natural Transcendental Meditation technique in India. He taught that the purpose of life is the expansion of happiness and that every human can reach their infinite potential. Transcendental Meditation spread throughout the world as Maharishi travelled the globe, providing profound insights into human evolution, reviving an ancient Indian tradition that had been fragmented and misinterpreted for many years.

In 1971, Maharishi developed a new science that would provide a complete understanding of consciousness known as the Science of Creative Intelligence. He envisioned it as a supplementary course that could be taught at universities around the world, making all knowledge meaningful while revealing the laws of nature in every area of study. It was his belief that when students completed the course, they would easily connect any subject to themselves. The program was introduced at top-notch universities, such as Yale and Stanford, with great success. Dr. Keith Wallace, a post-doctoral researcher at Harvard organized a large symposium on the subject on the Amherst campus of the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Wallace’s PhD dissertation included the first research on Transcendental Meditation. It was at this symposium that Maharishi announced his plan to create a university whose entire curriculum would incorporate the Science of Creative Intelligence.

The first classes at the newly created Maharishi International University were held in 1973 in Santa Barbara, California in a rented building complex near the University of California. Enrollment was high from the beginning and the school quickly outgrew the building. The faculty, many of whom were Ivy League-trained PhDs, began searching for a full campus that would offer laboratories, libraries, residence halls and cafeterias. In 1973, Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, closed its doors and the school’s million-square-foot campus was placed on the market. Private benefactors provided the funding and Maharishi International University took ownership and moved the campus in the summer of 1974.

That summer, a long line of yellow school buses pulled into Fairfield, Iowa and the first students on the Iowa campus of Maharishi International University stepped out. Over the next few years, the school expanded rapidly. In 1995, the school officially became known as Maharishi University of Management. The school is still committed to consciousness-based education, focusing on creative potentials that often go unused in life. The school also focuses on sustainability for life in harmony with natural law, dedicated to fulfilling the seven goals the Maharishi expressed more than 30 years ago:

  • To develop the full potential of the individual
  • To realize the highest ideal of education
  • To improve governmental achievements
  • To solve the age-old problem of crime and all behavior that brings unhappiness to our world family
  • To bring fulfillment to the economic aspirations of individuals and society
  • To maximize the intelligent use of the environment
  • To achieve the spiritual goals of humanity in this generation

For more than 40 years, the Maharishi University of Management has pioneered a new approach to learning through Consciousness-Based education which supplies an element that is missing in traditional colleges and universities. All students must practice Transcendental Meditation which offers significant benefits for education, including increased brain function, creativity and intelligence. Students take one full-time course per month, allowing them to immerse themselves in a field of study without the stress of three or four subjects at one time. There is a 3½-day break between each course to allow the student time for rest and recreation throughout the year. Although the school understands that all forms of meditation produce changes in brain functioning, only Transcendental Meditation is used on the campus.
