During the late 19th century, the industrial age was at its prime in Newark, New Jersey. Thomas Edison’s achievements on Ward Street kicked off an age when industry including thread, metals, paints and leather goods thrived. Edison’s rival, Edward Weston, even established the first factory to commercially produce dynamo electric machines in the area.
In 1880, an act established by Essex County established three schools of industrial education in Newark, Trenton and Hoboken. On February 9, 1885, 88 students were the first to attend the Newark Technical School despite the terrible snowstorm that raged outdoors. The school opened originally in a rented building on West Park Street and most of the students attended classes at night. A capital campaign to build a dedicated building launched in 1886 and the cornerstone laid at the intersection of High Street and Summit Place. This building would eventually become Weston Hall and, in 1913, Colton Hall, a library named for the dynamic first director, Dr. Charles A. Colton, was completed.
In 1949, the school was renamed the Newark College of Engineering. During the Depression and World War II, when many students left for the war effort, the school struggled, but was still able to purchase the former Newark Orphan Asylum, which became Eberhardt Hall. After World War II, the school grew tremendously. In 1946, about 75 percent of the freshman class had served in the Armed Forces. In 1958, Weston Hall was demolished and replaced with the current structure.
The New Jersey School of Architecture joined the college in 1973, allowing the college to evolve into a true technological university. At that time, the school was renamed the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The first dormitory on campus, Redwood Hall, was completed in 1979.
Today, the school has been recognized for providing graduates with a high rate of return on their educational investment. It has earned national prominence for its 46 bachelor’s, 56 master’s and 19 doctorate degree programs. There are over 10,600 students attending the college and more than 2,000 of them live on campus.

New Jersey Institute of Technology is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Accreditation validates that a college or university meets standards set by an outside organization that determine the school offers excellence in education. Specific programs at the college may be accredited by industry accreditation organizations as well.
New Jersey Institute of Technology Application Process
Freshman applicants to the New Jersey Institute of Technology must complete a Common Application. Students must submit official high school transcripts and the student’s entire record is used as a criteria for admission, especially grades in math, science and English. The school does recognize trends in performance such as grade improvement between freshman and senior year. Students must provide official SAT or ACT scores and applicants should be in the top 30 percentile of their graduating class. Students who wish to attend Architecture, Digital Design, Industrial Design or Interior Design must submit a portfolio of creative work. A letter of recommendation is also required to apply.
A student is considered a transfer if they have completed at least 15 semester hours, which must include English composition, mathematics and science. It is desired that the mathematics hours include pre-calculus and that the science hours include chemistry and/or physics. Students must also have a minimum GPA of 2.0 for admission, although some programs require a GPA of 2.5. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended must be provided as well as a list of courses in progress.
To apply for master’s level programs, students must have completed a four-year undergraduate program from an accredited college or university with a cumulative grade point average of no less than 2.8. Students must provide GRE scores, although GMAT scores are required for School of Management programs. One letter of recommendation is required and must be in a sealed envelope.
Students who wish to enter doctorate programs must have an appropriate academic background and supply official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Students must have a GPA of at least 3.5 and GRE scores are required for all doctoral programs. Three letters of recommendation are required in sealed envelopes and students must provide a statement of purpose.

Undergraduate tuition for New Jersey residents is $511 per credit hour and for out-of-state residents $1,182. Graduate tuition for in-state residents is $1,006 per credit hour and $1,444 for out-of-state residents.
Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and work-study. More than 72 percent of students receive financial aid and awards range from $500 to $31,000. The average financial aid package is approximately $16,358. In order to qualify for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
