Strayer University is an American independent for-profit higher learning institution with 80 campuses scattered across 24 states and a large online division. The university was initially founded in 1892 as Strayer’s Business College to train former farm workers with business skills in Baltimore, Maryland. As enrollment grew, Strayer opened a branch in Washington, DC to train accountants and government clerks during World War I. In 1969, Strayer received the accreditation needed to grant four-year bachelor’s degrees and was renamed Strayer College. As technological advancements created a higher demand for computer training, Strayer began offering online classes via the Internet in 1996 and was granted university status.

Today, Strayer University specializes in offering high-demand college degrees in convenient online and evening formats for working adults. Of the total 48,000 students, around 60% complete all of their degree’s coursework online from anywhere with an Internet connection. Students can now choose from various undergraduate and graduate degree programs focused in fast-growing fields of business, technology, and education. As a well-respected national university well-known for its Jack Welch Management Institute, Strayer University takes pride in having produced more than 100,000 successful graduates in its 123-year history.

Strayer University Accreditation Details

Regional accreditation is a measuring stick that tells students whether an educational institution provides a high-quality education that will transfer to other schools and the workforce. Strayer University is accredited by one of the six regional accrediting bodies recognized in the United States, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Strayer’s technology programs also meet the national training standards for aspiring information systems security professionals and systems administrators through the NSA Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS). Students in the B.S. in Information Technology will also benefit from a curriculum aligned with the guidelines of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Strayer University Application Requirements

Specific requirements may vary by state, but Strayer offers an open-access admissions policy for all undergraduate students. Students seeking a bachelor’s degree will not be judged based on standardized test scores or grade point averages. All students who can adequately provide proof of a high school diploma, GED, or a foreign equivalent will be accepted. If you’re transferring from an accredited post-secondary institution, you may be eligible to receive credits for previous college courses, exams, experiential learning, corporate training, or military service.

After making an appointment with an admissions officer, prospective students will be required to submit a completed application form with an application fee. Certification of your high school graduation or equivalent is necessary through an official transcript, but grades will not be weighed in acceptance. Once students register for their first courses, a new student orientation will be required at a local campus. Students taking any online courses will attend a special orientation devoted to online education and learn of their computer system requirements.

Tuition and Financial Aid

For an undergraduate program like the B.S. in Information Technology, full-time students carrying 13.5 or more credit hours per quarter can expect to pay $1,420 per course. Part-time undergraduate students taking nine or fewer credit hours per quarter will also need to pay $1,420 for each course. In addition to tuition, students should allow approximately $150 per course for covering textbook costs and other educational supplies. A technology fee of $65 is also added onto the tuition expenses each term for online students.

Since Strayer is dedicated to making education affordable for working adults, there are several financial aid options available to reduce these costs further. As an accredited institution, Strayer students are eligible to finance their college through Federal Student Aid, including Stafford Loans, Direct Loans, and PLUS Loans. For funds that won’t need to be repaid with interest, Strayer students can be considered for the Pell, FSEOG, and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants by filing a FAFSA form before the deadline. Students may also qualify for state financial assistance programs, such as the PHEAA State Grant, Florida State Grant, or Vermont Grant.

Strayer University also offers numerous scholarship opportunities to provide free money for earning a valuable bachelor’s degree. For instance, the Graduation Fund is offered to new undergraduate students on their day of enrollment to grow a college fund as they successfully complete courses. This fund could potentially save students up to $14,200 in tuition, which is equivalent to ten full courses. Past President Ron K. Bailey also created the Bailey Family Foundation Scholarship to provide $5,000 for four years to students in Florida who maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and showcase financial need.

Strayer is also a member of GoArmyEd and the Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership (NCPDLP) to provide unique benefits to active and veteran military members. When combined with the Graduation Fund, Strayer’s Active Duty Military Scholarship will provide $14,300 and federal military tuition assistance of $29,700 to null all tuition costs for qualified service members! In collaboration with the Department of Defense, the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) program is also available to offer $4,000 to military spouses interested in pursuing a Strayer degree.
