Although formal education is very beneficial, one can get started with an existing knowledge of technology and then can learn on the job.

It is possible to obtain a Support Specialist position directly. However, it is advantageous to complete an internship with a company first to learn from professionals and gain first-hand experience. It is also very possible that an organization will hire an intern when a position opens up. There are also multiple levels of Support Specialists so, one can start at a more entry level position and then move up as one gains experience.

The need for Computer Support Specialists is expected to grow 17% over the next ten years. Much of this is due to the greatly increasing use of computer systems taking the place of traditional business systems, especially in the healthcare field.
